No, that isn’t a typo in the title. From Stanley Kubrick and Arthur c Clarke’s seminal science fiction film comes the legendary USSS (United States Space Ship) Discovery, man’s first attempt to probe the secrets of Jupiter and the Monoliths. The ship contained many novel features, from an internal carousel to simulate gravity, to a sentient computer system, HAL 9000 and a trio of small work pods. The command crew, Dave Bowman and Frank Poole, would fly the ship to Jupiter along with HAL, while three scientists slept in suspended animation to be awakened at the destination. Alas, all did not go to plan. This is a truly beautiful shot of the Discovery passing by on it’s way to Jupiter, with it’s huge dish antennae pointing back to Earth. It makes a truly stunning wallpaper too.
