The Dambusters

Our blast from the past continues: this amazing wallpaper shows a recreation of the famous Dambusters Raid (properly known as Operation Chastise) in May 1943. The huge Avro Lancaster bombers flew in low behind the dams at night, deploying the world-famous “bouncing bomb” invented by Barnes Wallis, destroying the of 617 Squadron Mohne and Edersee dams and damaging a third. The damage caused catastrophic flooding, destroying power stations and setting back industrial production by months. Now, many decades later, a Lancaster flies that mission again, but this time in daylight and without the bombs. Yes, they really are that low, just a few tens of feet above the water. The piloting skill required to do that at night in heavy flak is astonishing. This brilliant wallpaper is a must for any historic aviation fans.
