Today we’re at the startling distance of 28 million light years, admiring the magnificent Sombrero Galaxy, otherwise known as Messier 104. This enormous spiral galaxy lies in the constellation of Virgo and is so named because, well, it looks like a giant Mexican hat. According to some astronomers it’s the brightest galaxy within 30 million light years but there is some dispute about that. At any rate, it looks stunning and makes an amazing desktop wallpaper for any astronomy fan.
