This amazing picture gives us not only an amazing desktop background, but an ironic historical twist. It’s a Russian R-7 rocket launching from Baikonur Cosmodrome, but it’s carrying an American crew to the ISS. Since the R-7 was originally designed as the USSR’s first ICBM, able to carry nuclear warheads to America, the fact that it now carriers American cargo to space is both amusing and heartwarming. The rocket itself is remarkable, deigned in the 1950’s and used to launch both Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin into orbit, it is still in service today, making it the most successful rocket design in history, with over a thousand launches to date.
