Crossroads Baker

This time we have a rather sobering image for you. This is the blast cloud from the Crossroads Baker nuclear test at Bikini Atoll in July 1946. This was the 4th nuclear weapon ever detonated and the test was aimed at finding out how effective nuclear weapons are against warships. This was the second blast of the test series and was detonated 90 feet underwater beneath a landing ship. No piece of the landing ship above the bomb was ever found. The black oblong shape at the right of the central column is believed to be the USS Arkansas, a 27,000 battleship that has been lifted up on end and pinned to the seabed from the force of the blast. Now that sobering thought I mentioned earlier? This was one of the smaller bombs tested, most weapons actually deployed were at least ten times as powerful as this.
