We’re sticking with the big guns, but today we’re moving back in time a while, to this beautiful image of the USS Iowa, lead ship of her class, leaving harbour during the Second World War. This class was the ultimate in American battleship design and would serve with distinction in WW” and Korea, providing devastating fire support to the Marines and Army ashore. They were also fast enough to escort the big aircraft carriers, making them doubly useful. After Korea they were mothballed and, aside from New Jersey’s foray to Vietanm in 68-69, remained that way until 1982, when President Ronald Reagan ordered them recommissioned and updated with modern weapons, giving a new lease of life to these old battlewagons.
