ICBM Test

We return to our Military category with this stunning shot of an ICBM test during the Cold War. By this stage, both sides had developed missiles with multiple independent warheads for attacking many different targets. Naturally these multiple final stages needed testing, so the Americans launched one Minuteman missile (with no actual warheads of course) from Vandenberg AFB in California, aimed at Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific. This image shows the fiery trails of the eight different warheads hurtling towards their own separate targets offshore. It’s a sobering thought to remember that, had that been a real missile, those fiery trails would end in bright flashes and rising fireballs over Soviet cities.
